Top tips for storing your belongings during renovations

In the long run, renovating your home will be worth it - more living space, pleasant environment and it may well increase the value of your home. And dreaming about what your home will look like when your renovation project ends is all part of the fun.

However, the short-term reality of living with the clutter, mess, dust and endless tea rounds for the builders - while juggling a job and home routines - is a challenge. Some people swear they’ll never do it again. Others love the constant projects and energy involved. Which camp will you fall into? Read on to find out how you can enjoy the process and (hopefully) want to do it all again one day!

After setting a budget, finding the builder and agreeing on designs, most would agree that a major source of stress is figuring out what to do with your belongings while the renovations are in full swing. If you’re considering some DIY, then it’s all the more important to protect your belongings as things can get messy pretty quickly. Painting, decorating, fitting new bathrooms, kitchens, knocking down walls… you name it… whatever the job there will be dust, splashes and a fair number of knocks to contend with.

Even with the best will in the world, those dust sheets will slip off and even a day’s worth of dust can cause havoc with your belongings. Then, just when you think you’ve cleaned away the dust it settles again and the whole process has to be repeated. Even if you tape up the doors of unused rooms, dust will inevitably get into cupboards, soft furnishings and wardrobes. Keeping precious belongings indoors during renovation work also risks accidental damage. Homeowners may not have accidental cover in their home insurance policies and can end up with damage that costs a lot to fix or replace.

Assuming you’ve created Fort Knox at home and no dust is floating into anything you’ve masterfully taped up, the novelty of squeezing around boxes and reaching for inaccessible items - or never knowing where anything is - quickly wears off. It causes stress on the family and unnecessary anxiety. And there are the over-optimistic timescales and promises from builders, prolonging the chaos at home.

If you have space in your house that you don’t use often, like a guest bedroom, it could be the perfect solution to store your belongings from other rooms. Bear in mind a few things to keep this option convenient…

Add time to the job: Assume your project will over-run, so be prepared to lose this space for a while.

Fill the room well: When you need access to things, you’ll find them more easily if you have created a pathway round the larger items.

Get practical: Put large items at the back as they’ll still be visible and all small boxes and belongings at the front (unless they’ll definitely not be needed during the renovations). Sounds obvious but in the rush to get ready these things can be overlooked!

Label ALL your boxes: don’t fall into the trap of assuming you’ll remember everything, or not putting enough detail in your labelling.

Getting a lot of your contents out of the way will improve the whole experience – and it doesn’t need to cost the earth. Factor it in upfront as part of your costs, which can also in fact help you avoid moving out all together and the associated large rental costs. while also having access to them.

Consider off-site storage to protect your belongings. Most self-storage centres need you to bring everything to them, which can add time, effort and cost to this process.

However, Caboodle Storage collects and returns your belongings to your door and we even deliver you empty boxes and bags to pack. It really is simple and easy to make the most of your space while renovating your home and keep the daily stresses of clutter to a minimum. We protect your belongings every step of the way and store them in our secure, clean storage centres in the UK. If you need your boxes back (or even one box) we will bring them straight back to you on a date of your choice.

Caboodle provides sturdy, 80 litre boxes that are water-resistant with an inner liner to ensure maximum protection for your belongings. We also send you extra-large waterproof bags to slip over packed suitcases or other oversized items like chairs, guitars and golf clubs.

Unlike a self-storage unit, you only pay for what you use with Caboodle as it is a convenient ‘by the box’ service. Plus, we provide free online cataloguing of all your belongings so you know where everything is.

Our service is perfect for home renovations and you can store for as little as one month or for as many months as you need. Businesses can also benefit from our flexible service as well – helping you manage your office space for short and long-term needs.

Large furniture: You can avoid having to remove large furniture into storage by just emptying the contents and storing those in boxes/bags. This makes the furniture lighter and easy to move around as the project progresses.

Clothing: Pack and store by season into your empty suitcases – labelled by person. Keep clothing that you’ll need for the next 3-6 months including festive and formal wear.

Books: Just keep a few to hand. Then those bookshelves will be so easy to move around.

Toys: Store them but just keep a box or two at home and we can return fresh ones to play with and collect the other ones.

Documents and files: Protect all your documents that you don’t need to hand. Our water-resistant packaging is perfect for keeping important documents safe.

Hobby equipment: We store most things and provide large bags to protect them.

Small furniture: What doesn’t fit in a box can be stored in our large bags – as long as one person can carry it and it doesn’t weigh more than 25kg.

Kitchen items: So many cupboards are filled with kitchen appliances and items that we barely use. If you are having kitchen work done then we can help save space by storing all your belongings that you won’t need to hand.

Soft furnishings: Things that easily collect dust like cushions, curtains, pillows and bedding can be stored safely until you’re ready to use them again.

Paintings and picture frames: Wrap and store these in our boxes.

Memorabilia: We can protect your precious belongings from dust and accidental damage.

So, with just a bit of planning, you can organise your belongings to keep them safe during your renovation work, and keep them out of the way so you can concentrate on creating your dream home.
